Volcanoes
The Redoubt Volcano is a composite volcano in Alaska, at the coordinates 60°29′ North, 152°44′ West. It formed through the course of thousands of eruptions, each one making the volcano taller and wider. It took millions of years, along with thousands of eruptions, for the volcano to become what it is today.
Mount Redoubt has andesite magma, and has explosive eruptions. These eruptions launch tons and tons of ash into the air, blocking out the sun and making the air near unbreathable.
Mount Redoubt has a large impact on economy. The ash from eruptions can fill and poison water, making it very difficult to fish, and it kills the fish trying to be caught. It impairs business when it erupts, since it destroys oil mines, and the ash can get caught in airplanes and helicopters, shutting them down and making it very difficult to fly. It also impairs trade, because the ash poisons the air, making it very difficult for people to breathe, encouraging them to stay indoors, and not trade.
Volcanoes have also impacted culture in various ways. They have affected religion in that when they explode, natives believe that the gods are mad at them, and that they need to change their ways. They have affected art in that there are ancient cave paintings of volcanoes in caves, depicting the disasters that come from the eruptions. They have affected folklore as well, in that the eruptions create stories such as “The summer that never came.”
Volcanoes also impact infrastructure, because of the fact that they can destroy just about anything. They impact structural design in that building in the vicinity must be built to withstand the weight of tons of ash and buildings are built so that lava will flow under them. It affects architectural design in that architects are inspired by eruptions to build newer, hotter buildings.
